How to Set Up a Wireless Home Network?

Wireless networks, simply defined, allow computers to communicate with one another over wireless routers and to access wireless accessories. This wireless technology can be extended to older computers with the addition of a WiFi adapter.
A wireless home network allows multiple users to share an Internet connection as well as certain files and documents and - providing they can be placed on the network - printers, scanners, and other peripheral devices. Because of the ready availability of wholesale wireless accessories and improvements in Wi-Fi setup guide instructions, the configuration of such a network is now an easy project for almost any computer user.

Benefits of Home Wireless Networking

Wireless access has become increasingly popular around college campuses, in coffee franchises and in the home. Wireless networks are neater in terms of physical set up and allow computers to be located anywhere in the house. In addition, wireless technology allows other "networkable" devices such as Tivo units or game consoles to easily access the Internet connection. As prices for wireless network equipment have continued to fall, the technology has become accessible to all levels of computer users.

Purchasing Your Wireless Router

Basically, a router serves as a bridge to connect a computer or computers to a broadband Internet modem, usually a cable or DSL connection. Most home wireless equipment is produced by renowned companies like Dlink and Linksys in a price range of $85 to $160 for a quality wireless router.

Among the three major wireless data standards that are used in contemporary devices, 802.11b is currently the dominant level at which wireless data is transferred. It is more than adequate in range and performance, using the 2.4GHz radio spectrum for transmitting data at a maximum rate of 11mbps. (802.11g, capable of 54mbps is quickly evolving toward become the favored standard.)

The Basic Process of Configuring a Wire Setup at Home

If possible before setting up your own home wireless network discuss the process with someone who has done it before so that you know what to expect. The steps to configure your computers for wireless access will vary slightly based upon your operating system and hardware but basically involve the following.
Does your computer have a wireless adaptor?
If your computer does not have built-in wireless capability you will need to install a wireless network adapter into each system that will use the network. There are several routes to take to enable a desktop system to access a wireless network. You can open the case and insert a PCI network adaptor in a blank slot or you can purchase an external USB adaptor. Both types of adaptors will come with driver disks and you will be prompted to insert the disk when the computer is restarted or when the USB device is recognized. For laptop systems you can use either a PCMCIA card adapter or a USB adaptor. Both are "plug and play" devices that will be recognized immediately by your system. You will then be prompted to install drivers as needed.
